Low pitched continuous hum similar to an idling diesel engine We have a fish tank with an impeller which I think makes the noise but no one else can hear it as it is masked by other sounds such as water flowing. Also the house is a stone building built on rock so perhaps an amplifier (tank is in a corner on a stone floor). I never heard the noise before moving here (despite having the same fishtank) and lived here 5 years with same tank before I noticed it.
