similar to a powerful engine running in the distance combined with powerful wind sounds; I used to confuse it with low-flying planes the windows from the apartment i live in all face a very busy and loud street. even at night there are no moments with no moving car in sight. also, i live in between 2 major hospitals, so the noise is increased by passing ambulances (often) and i find it weird that when i hear the sound at night and open the window to see if there is any parked loud car with the engine running outside, it stops. also i have a trained ear in terms of identifying distinctive sounds, from my long lasting hobbies regarding musical instruments and singing and i don t know of any sound that i can confuse with this "hum". And regarding mental illness (there was a question above, but none of the choices were fitted for me), i was incorrectly diagnosed with bipolar disorder 6 years ago and took many types of medication since for treatment, including lithium, but also other medications with high-risk and unpleasant side effects. My last psychiatrist recommended trans-cranial magnetic stimulation, which had an incredible effect after too few sessions, which, along with other factors, had lead him to conclude that there was a strong possibility for the diagnosis to have been set incorrectly from the beginning. ever since this, i stopped any treatment and i have experienced no symptoms ( i know this info is not required, but, at the rate of big discoveries being made about the brain these days, it might be helpful to know as much as possible)
