Pilot witness in Cher, France
On October 26, 1980 at around 10:35 a.m., a witness, an amateur pilot, spots from his property several bright flashes in the sky that make him think of the beacon light of an aircraft. He then sees a very bright flame followed by black smoke. No noise is heard. Thinking it is a plane crash, he alerts the nearest control tower. During the gendarmerie investigation, no aircraft in distress was reported in the area, and no rocket launch was found in the vicinity.
