An open record of things people cannot explain

An account in France, France

The phenomenon observed on Thursday, April 9, 2015, around 7:10 a.m. was observed simultaneously by many witnesses spread across the Southwest (Foix, Montauban, Saint-Orens...) and the West of France (La Chapelle-sur-Erdre, Plozevet), from Ariège to Finistère. Witnesses in the Spanish Pyrenees also reported it (see the summary table of testimonies collected on this phenomenon). This phenomenon is called a BOLIDE, an old term meaning "ball-shaped," a term more often used to designate a very fast vehicle, in reference to the speed of the observed phenomenon (see generic explanation of the phenomenon on bolide). Because of the light intensity of the phenomenon, most witnesses, who see this kind of phenomenon for the first time, think it is a very close phenomenon, a few kilometers away, or even less; in reality, this luminous phenomenon occurs at an altitude between 80 and 20 km, which is why witnesses several hundred kilometers apart can see it simultaneously (see the report on a similar recent event: A large bolide observed above Spanish Catalonia). In the case of the bolide of Thursday, April 9, 2015, given the trajectories described by the witnesses, it probably occurred above the Atlantic Ocean, about a hundred kilometers from the coasts (rough approximation). The fragments of the meteoroid, ranging in size from a few millimeters to centimeters, very likely fell back into the Atlantic Ocean. GEIPAN classifies this case as A: observation of a bolide, result of the atmospheric entry of a meteoroid.
