Red lights in La Runion, France

On Sunday, August 25, 2013 between 7:30 PM and 7:45 PM, a witness observed from his balcony two successive luminous phenomena in the sky that he did not recognize. The observation of a large red light in the sky for 2 minutes, moving slowly, may be the observation of a Thai lantern moving in the wind toward the witness (prevailing easterly wind on Reunion Island). The strong white light coming from the sea may be a satellite: the Calsky forecasts (attached) indicate the passage of the satellite "USA 217/STPSat-2" on a trajectory compatible with the given time: however, the brightness reported by the witness is not consistent with the low brightness predicted by the Calsky model (magnitude between 5 and 8), but a reflection is not excluded. It could also be another unlisted military satellite, brighter. These two hypotheses, although plausible, are not solid enough for GEIPAN to adopt them as highly probable. GEIPAN classifies this case "C" — this observation being not very strange — for lack of information to consolidate these hypotheses.
