An open record of things people cannot explain

An account in Val-d'Oise, France

On June 29, 2012 at around 6:06 a.m. (for time precision, see the investigation report), a walker, alerted by his dog, is intrigued by the presence of a white luminous object, stationary at low altitude above a field at the edge of a forest. The observation, which lasts less than twenty seconds, nevertheless allows the witness to state that the object was large, flat on the bottom and concave on top. As it begins to rain, the object rises slightly, tilts, and departs at high speed toward the cloudy sky. No particular noise, no smoke are noted during the observation by the frightened witness. No other testimony has been collected on this phenomenon. This case has the particularity of being extremely similar and synchronous with a very common natural phenomenon: the observation of the sun at sunrise between two cloud layers. But several important elements do not fit: -Mainly the direction of observation: 54° difference from the sun, this difference is impossible to attribute to uncertainty. -The tilt of the phenomenon before its disappearance: this second element could be explained by a perceptual illusion due to the luminous intensity of the phenomenon, or by analogy with widely publicized UAP observations. -The apparent size of the phenomenon: almost 10 times larger than the image of the sun: overestimation of the apparent diameter of the Moon or Sun at its rising is very common, but rarely in these proportions. The GEIPAN investigators went to the site a first time to verify the location and observation directions indicated by the witness and ruled out an unintentional error in direction estimation by the witness. A second time to study the possibility of a complex reflection of the sun allowing it to be observed in another direction. They could not demonstrate any satisfactory hypothesis; but it should also be noted that the meteorological conditions that morning were very particular, and of course not reproducible: great heat and heavy rain the day before, and heavy cloud cover that same morning. Its strangeness is average, since the phenomenon is similar to a very common natural phenomenon, but with at least one important non-conforming characteristic. The GEIPAN classifies this case as "D1" as unexplained and of average consistency.
