This observation case is one of the cases classified as "C" in 2010 by GEIPAN. It was the subject of a new investigation (see the document: investigation notes). On October 8, 1978 at 10:20 PM, two witnesses observed above the fields facing their home a luminous sphere the color of fire and stationary. An incomplete red circle surrounded the object. The phenomenon, of variable luminosity, lasted about ten minutes then gradually disappeared into the night. No noise was heard during the observation and the disappearance of the phenomenon. No other testimony about this phenomenon was collected. The described phenomenon presents many common characteristics (observation duration, shape, size, color) with a perfectly known astronomical phenomenon: the Moon at moonset. Moreover, the Moon was indeed present in the area of the sky observed, while the witness does not mention it. It is not the visual perception of the witness that is in question, but the interpretation that the witness makes of their observation through their feelings. In the current GEIPAN classification, this case of low strangeness is classified as PAN A, observation linked to a misidentification with the Moon at moonset.
