An open record of things people cannot explain

An account in Calvados, France

On September 30, 2011, at around 10 p.m., a witness observed a stationary luminous point fairly low on the horizon. 45 minutes later, the witness saw the phenomenon begin to move and head north, crossing half the sky in about one minute. The first part of the observation, concerning a static object, could be consistent with the star Arcturus in the constellation Boötes. The second part, where the blinking white and red luminous point moves north and disappears in about one minute, is harder to explain. The hypothesis of an astronomical misidentification being ruled out, and misidentification with an airliner being unlikely given its characteristic lights, the possibility remains of an unlisted (military) satellite, which we were unable to verify. Of low strangeness and good consistency, this observation case can be classified as B, as a probable misidentification with the star Arcturus for the first part, and C for the second observation. This case is overall classified as C due to lack of information and cross-checks.
