An open record of things people cannot explain

An account in Nord, France

On Saturday, July 2, 2011, around 10:30 p.m., two people observed the silent passage of an orange spherical object flying on a descending trajectory in the sky. Flames were seen at the base of the object. The sphere quickly disappeared while rising into the sky. The description given by the witness matches that of a Thai lantern, and its movement is consistent with the wind on that day (north wind). One might think that this lantern was released at the end of the medieval festival that took place that day in Bergues, but GEIPAN was unable to contact the festival organizer to confirm this hypothesis. This case is classified as B: probable Thai lantern. A new witness contacted GEIPAN in December 2012 to confirm that it was a lantern (see letter and photo IMG 5081) and this allows the case to be reclassified as "A".
