Boom in Eure, France
On July 11, 1990, SEPRA was informed via the media of the discovery of a large crater that had appeared in a field. The crater is 14 m in diameter with a rim of collapsed earth about 2.5 m wide and a central mound of 4.5 m by 1.5 m in height. On examining the rocks and large boulders brought up from the subsoil, two hypotheses were considered: the fall of a large meteorite, or an underground explosion. A backhoe loader was brought in to explore the crater, proceeding carefully in layers of 50 to 70 cm. The exploration continued this way down to a depth of 7 meters. As the investigations progressed, fragments of sheet metal were found at various depths. Twenty-five metallic fragments were recovered in this way, which ruled out the meteorite fall hypothesis in favor of the probable underground explosion of a bomb dating from the Second World War. The fragments were sent to the DGA armament laboratory, whose conclusions confirmed the hypothesis considered. The reconstruction of the device made it possible to identify an incendiary bomb of 250 kg of British or American origin, probably manufactured in April 1942.
