Oise, France · 1984-09-03 · from the GEIPAN archive
GEIPAN continues to publish all of its archives on its public website www.geipan.fr. Among its publications are old cases classified at the time (A, B, C or D) which are now being re-examined, for the sole purpose of being more relevant in the conclusions. Thanks to new technical means (software) and the investigation experience acquired over all these recent years, this re-examination sometimes leads to new remarks or even a change of classification explained in an investigation note. This observation case previously classified D is part of a set of cases recently re-examined. On September 3, 1984 around midnight, two then three witnesses in a car are intrigued by the presence of a very luminous red-orange phenomenon at low altitude. The witnesses spot the UAP at several places on their route between les Fontanettes (municipality of Saint-Aubin-en-Bay), le Coudray-Saint-Germer and the Champignolle crossroads (municipality of Sérifontaine). No noise coming from this object is heard during the discontinuous observations. Taken by fear, the witnesses turn back. One of the witnesses (T1) had already made a similar observation in a car with her mother (T4) in July 1984. This case is consistent (3 witnesses), the description of the observation location and of the observed UAP is precise (see the investigation notes). The described phenomenon presents many common characteristics (observation duration, shape, size, color...) with a known astronomical phenomenon: the Moon at setting. The length of the observation window (half an hour or three-quarters of an hour), as well as the fact that the UAP seems to follow the motorists (following ball) evoke the observation of an astronomical phenomenon. The appearance described by the witnesses leaves no doubt: a voluminous and luminous object, low on the horizon to the Southwest, orange or red in color. A witness precision ("It was always round but however, a piece was missing on the left, as if a crescent was missing") even allows supposing that the Moon was then in gibbous phase, between the First Quarter and the Full Moon. The presence of the Moon in the observed direction is verified. The witnesses' indications are very precise thanks to locating with the road axis, and it corresponds perfectly. Likewise, the Moon is indeed in the expected gibbous phase. Finally, the witnesses do not mention the Moon even though it was indeed present in the different observed directions. The misidentification with the Moon is frequent in GEIPAN's records (see case search on the website www.geipan.fr with keyword Moon). What may be surprising here is the apparent absence of cloud cover or clouds that could accentuate the misidentification. The Moon is indeed described as round or almost, this is not one of those curious red shapes generated by breaks in clouds in front of the Moon. It is noted that the witnesses are young and it may be their first experience. Nevertheless, this observation created a strong strangeness and a state of shock: "I was panicked, I was very scared", "I said to XXX, quick, we turn around", "I was really very scared, it brought tears to my eyes" (T1), "I did not stop, I think it was out of fear", "all three of us, we asked ourselves if we should continue", "we fled to le Coudray", "We were all three seized by panic. XXX was crying in the car because she had been very scared" (T2), "we could no longer move forward", "XXX was screaming in the car" (T3). GEIPAN classifies the case as A: observation of the Moon.

Tell us what you sawIf this reminds you of something a friend or a relative told you once and never mentioned again, send them this page. Reading that a stranger described the same thing is usually the part that helps.
