[chap. •-^ f^ and I were preparing to go to sleep, after talking some time, when I heard ]f/^ > something like very faint music, and seemed to feel what people call ' a 1^.. presence.' I put out my hand and touched Lady C, saying, ' Did you hear ^ o that % ' She said, ' Oh, don't ! Just now I saw something going across the room ! ' We were both a good deal frightened, and tried to go to sleep as soon as we could. But I remember asking Lady C. exactly what she had seen, and she said, ' A sort of white shadow, like a spirit.' The above occurred at Bishopthorpe, York.

This is a witness statement collected in the 1880s by Edmund Gurney, Frederic Myers and Frank Podmore of the Society for Psychical Research, and published in Phantasms of the Living (1886), the first large scientific collection of such testimony. Witnesses signed their statements and were often corroborated by others, whose statements appear as their own accounts.
