62, Commercial Road, Newport, Monmouthshire. November 13th, 1885. In answer to your letter in reference to my father's death, I will endeavour in a few lines to give you the information you want. As the ship was lying in the port of St. Malo, in France, on the 15th December, 1871, I was lying in my berth at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. I heard a voice. I knew the voice at once to be my father's, calling ' Jim, Jim, Jim.' It was not a dream, for I was awake and getting up. I asked the men on board whether they heard anyone calling. 1 Here again we have an account of three separate calls — the favourite legendary number (p. 229, note). In the first-hand version which follows, it will be seen that there is no mention of any repetition of the call, though it is represented as having consisted of three utterances of the name. They said, ' No.' I said to them, ' My father is dead.' When I arrived at Jersey (Island), my wife said to me, ' There is bad news for you.' I said, 'Yes, I know ; my father is dead.' This was about nine days after my father was lost in Burnham (Essex). When I read the news of his death, [I found that] it was at the same hour I heard his voice.
