Distant diesel engine, or heavy prop plane climbing. I am pretty sure this is an externally produced phenomenon, I can tell my mild tinnitus is internal. I have pretty good ears even with the high freq loss, and can still tell the difference between a Steinway and a Bechstein on CDs. I have almost perfect pitch, learnt not inborn, and can tune a guitar to concert with no reference.
