An account in Started in Parkersburg, WV. A few years later I moved few hours away to Morgantown
Mechanical, rhythmic. Reminds me of what it might feel/sound like being close to a gas well. Almost a rhythmic thump. I don’t know if I hear it or feel it. I assume I hear it but it sounds far away. I saw an episode of William Shatner’s The Unexplained about a town in Michigan where a lot of the people in the town were experiencing almost exactly the same thing I am. I saw a few people say exactly what I would to describe or explain my experiences. They thought it was coming from a plant across the river but I don’t think so because I’m having the same experience in a completely different state. I’ve spent hours lying in bed trying to think what could be causing it. Could it be gas pumped under ground to heat houses because it only happens in the winter? Can I only hear it at night because the world around me is so still? How come I don’t hear it every night? Do I really hear it or do I feel it? Is this something that’s really happening or is it a condition in my body? It seems to me to be becoming from the earth or the ground. I don’t feel like it’s coming from the two buildings I lived in...in different towns. I don’t feel like it’s a medical condition or anything like that. I’m healthy and take no medications for anything and have no conditions that I know of. I haven’t noticed anything different with my body from when I experience it and when I don’t. I have thought that maybe my ears are picking this up because the tones you can hear change with age and maybe at my age they have changed to the frequency of this sensation I’m experiencing. It’s only happened in the last 5 years (From 40 to 45) and I only notice it maybe a few nights in the winter. Not all the time. It does feel/sound mechanical. Like something running but very slowly. I can almost picture a gas well churning somewhere off in the distance causing vibrations in the ground that I am picking up. It’s perfectly timed and doesn’t change in pitch or frequency and it usually doesn’t stop. Like a recurring thump that builds and drops. I think I fall asleep before it ever goes away. It does keep me up some nights and I have listened/felt it for hours before I fall a sleep. I get up at times and sit on the couch and try and wait it out but if I listen for it, it’s still there. I notice it more when my head is in the pillow almost like I feel it. Like putting your ear to the ground to hear things coming off in the distance. If you have anymore questions or any explanation of what this is please feel free to email me at jayabrooks@gmail.com. I would appreciate any info as to what this may be whether it’s physical or outside environmental conditions. I have had many sleepless nights when it’s happening over the years trying to figure this out.
What they reported
First noticed: 2015
Pitch: The closest I can get is triangle at 30 hertz. But it doesn’t match what I’m experiencing. The sound I hear/feel is more of a repeating thump. Almost like a pumping action. It builds up and repeats. Never gets faster or slower. It sounds deep and far away almost like it’s in the ground and it’s coming up from there. I’ve experienced the same thing hundreds of miles apart in location.
Loudest: During the night
Where: Indoors
Symptoms: Insomnia, Sense of vibration
Changes with weather: Yes. Only notice it at night in winter months when it’s very cold outside. Never heard it outdoors.
