A low thrum, bass sound. It's has a low electrical quality to it almost. It wavers and throbs. Thank god for this site - I thought I was cray-cray all this time! I didn't know this existed! I've been hearing this noise since I bought my house in 2002. I hear it mostly in the Summer and early fall, but ONLY at night. It is low, far away and sounds like the fridge is running downstairs and kind of vibrating the house. In my obsessive quest to find the noise, I turned off everything in the house with the circuit breaker and discovered I could still hear it - so know it's not electrical. After a year spent searching for the answer, including hiring $$$ various professionals, I gave up. I ended up changing rooms where I slept (to a room where I hear it a bit less) and I got a Dohm White Noise generator from Amazon, (best $40 I spent in my life) and have been sleeping soundly ever since. I tell you it made my day to find out I'm not the only one.
