both described an orange orb
Autre, France · 1954-08--- · from the GEIPAN archive
A witness reported in 2012 an observation made in July or August 1954 around 8 p.m. (see questionnaire) in Sainte-Clotilde (town of Mers-el-Kébir) near Oran (Algeria); the witness, at the time, was 15 years old. He later places his observation on a weekday between August 24 and 27. In Sainte-Clotilde, one day at the end of the day, people seated at a table are suddenly surprised to see falling from the sky a fire-orange disk, very bright. It follows a downward trajectory toward the sea but stops in mid-air and remains motionless above the horizon. The disk then departs again at high speed in an upward trajectory at 45° toward the East before disappearing. The observation lasted about two minutes. Only one testimony will be collected on this phenomenon. However, an article in Le Provençal of August 27, 1954 reports an observation of a fireball seen from Plan-de-Cuques (13) on August 22, 1954 at 8 p.m. The hypothesis of a fireball observation can explain a large part of the observation described in this case. However, given the many uncertainties on this case: precise date unknown, old memory therefore potentially altered, second part of the observation explainable only by a physiological cause that cannot be verified, the GEIPAN classifies this case as C — non-exploitable observation, due to lack of reliable information.
