Vaucluse, France · 2012-08-14 · from the GEIPAN archive
On August 14, 2012, between 11:30 PM and 11:35 PM, a witness sees appear in the sky an orange light, rounded in shape, vaguely triangular. He notes a silent movement: the trajectory is perfectly straight, constant, and horizontal. Three other witnesses saw the phenomenon without giving their testimony. The observation lasted about 2 minutes. Given the witness's description, and the fact that it was a traditional day for celebrations, the hypothesis of a Thai lantern was favored. But the weather report from Avignon indicates a slight south wind, a priori incompatible with a northeast flow in the Methamis valley. This hypothesis was therefore not retained. The hypothesis of atmospheric reentry of satellite debris is ruled out due to the westward movement. The apparent speed of the object is judged too slow for a fireball (meteorite reentry) described as not very luminous. The described appearance is also not consistent with that of an aircraft. Given these various uncertainties, GEIPAN classifies this case "C": lack of information.
