Pilot witness in Calvados, France

On January 7, 2013, around 10:50 PM UTC (11:50 PM local time), the pilot of an Airbus A340 reports having seen what he thinks is a re-entry into the atmosphere of space debris. The observation took place around 10:46 PM, around 049°10'54''/000°18'53'', which corresponds to around the overflight of Deauville. This testimony is to be compared with the case of a simultaneous observation in Ardèche at the Col de L'escrinet (07) on the same date. Other testimonies of this type will appear in the press in January 2013. Given the witnesses' accounts, the observed phenomenon is very probably the re-entry into the atmosphere of a satellite debris, possibly from the Iridium 33 satellite. This case is classified as "B": probable observation of an atmospheric re-entry.
