Pilot witness in Finistre, France

On November 18, 2012 at around 8:30 PM, a witness observed with the naked eye and then with binoculars the presence of a light in the sky. This glow was stationary and flickered (green and red flickers); its center was black and its light intensity varied. The witness moved around, had several other people around him observe the glow, then contacted the gendarmerie. A patrol was sent to the scene and also observed the phenomenon. The gendarmes alerted the West Air Navigation Control Center (CRNA-O) near Brest, and the air traffic controller wrote a report stating that a crew in flight approaching Quimper and he himself had made no particular observation on that date. He also stated that the military were not on duty in the sector that evening and that the primary radars at Lanvéoc and Landivisiau had seen nothing unusual. Despite a neighborhood investigation, only one testimony was collected on this phenomenon. The witness observed at length a stationary glow in the sky, changing color, toward the Southeast: a fixed light in the sky suggests an astronomical phenomenon, the color change could be due to scintillation. That day there was a slight west wind and a very humid atmosphere. But there was no very bright celestial body in that direction of the sky; however, the planet Jupiter was noted due East. The CNRA report provides additional elements, such as the height above the horizon of the UAP as well as the lack of visual/radar detection by the crew of an aircraft approaching Quimper and by the primary radars at Lanvéoc and Landivisiau. The report also indicates the absence of military activity in the sector. Given the objective elements defined in the previous chapters, we can conclude that this case is to be classified as "B" as a probable confusion with a helicopter. The phenomenon has all the characteristics of a helicopter observed at night, at a significant distance; possibly a Civil Security helicopter on a VFR night mission near Quimper Pluguffan airport, corresponding to the azimuth of the observation. This testimony is of average quality (too concise, not very precise, and lacking essential data), and of rather weak consistency because it comes from a single witness and without photos. The observation is not very strange because the UAP is easily characterizable, both in its appearance and in its behavior. GEIPAN classifies this case as "B": probable observation of a Civil Security helicopter approaching Quimper Pluguffan airport.
