An open record of things people cannot explain

An account in Loire, France

On February 13, 1980 at around 5:40 a.m., a postal worker on his way to work spotted a luminous phenomenon in a clear sky that intrigued him. Above the Monts du Lyonnais, he observed for 8 minutes a glow shaped like a half moon. It was yellow-orange in color and moved slowly on a north-south trajectory. This glow gradually faded. Only one other witness who was accompanying the person was able to see the phenomenon: however, he did not make a statement to the gendarmerie. Examination of the sky chart for that period shows the moon barely visible (new moon on the 16th) and very low on the horizon, but in the direction of the observation. The witness states that there was no moon: in fact he probably observed its glow without recognizing it (magnitude -8.9).
