GEIPAN continues to publish all of its archives on its public website www.geipan.fr. Among its publications are old cases classified at the time (A, B, C or D) which are now being re-examined, for the sole purpose of being more relevant in the conclusions. Thanks to new technical means (software) and the investigation experience acquired over all these recent years, this re-examination sometimes leads to new remarks or even a change of classification. This observation case, previously classified D and named PANTIN (93) 30.05.1993, is part of a set of cases recently re-examined (see the investigation report). On 30 May 1993 at 4:15 a.m., a witness returning home after an evening out observed from her balcony an orange rectangular shape in the sky over PANTIN. The shape had an estimated size of about 1 metre and seemed stationary for 15 minutes, then moved slowly while changing direction, moving away and disappearing at the horizon. The witness observed a flashing red light but no noise was heard. Still on her balcony, the same witness at 4:30 a.m. observed a second shape, this time circular and white, not dazzling, stationary. The size of this disc was also estimated at about 1 metre. The witness observed this second phenomenon continuously until 6 a.m., when the UAP disappeared very slowly. There are in fact two observations of two distinct UAPs: First (see case PANTIN (93) 30.05.1993 T1), it is probably the landing lights of an aircraft in a night VFR approach phase to one of the two Paris airports located in the witness's line of sight. Aircraft landing lights can indeed be seen from very far away, see for example on the GEIPAN website the case "EZE (06) 16.05.2014" where such an aircraft was observed at a distance from the witness of about 36 km, and the other example "FONTRAILLES (65) 31.10.2017" where the aircraft's lights are visible and almost motionless in daylight from 100 km for more than 10 minutes. The distance prevents the witness from distinguishing anything other than these powerful lights, whose colour and brightness are, at night, mixed with the red anti-collision light located under the aircraft's fuselage, giving this "orange rectangle" shape noted by the witness. The direction of movement towards the east, the low angular elevation above the horizon, the observation of a flashing red light after the aircraft pivoted on its axis, positioning it facing the runway, the slowness of the movement, as well as the absence of noise, support the hypothesis. Second, the duration of the observation, the slow movement of the UAP in the sky, its circular and white shape, as well as its disappearance due to the clouds present in number that night, support the hypothesis of confusion with the planet Venus, rising in the east and moving slowly towards the east-southeast while gaining elevation. The witness probably is not used to observing the sky at that late hour of the night and is not familiar with these astronomical phenomena. She scanned the sky probably following the attention or concern created by the first observation, which is the main observation to retain. The consistency is average and benefits mainly from the reference to buildings, which partially compensates for the absence of angular measurement readings by the gendarmes during their on-site investigation. This case PANTIN (93) 30.05.1993 T2 is classified A: observation of Venus.
