An open record of things people cannot explain

An account in Seine-Maritime, France

On April 1, 2017 at 10:30 PM, one witness and two other people are intrigued by the presence of a very bright point at low altitude in the night sky. This point seems to blink in different colors. Only one testimony is collected. The observation is consistent with that of a star; moreover, the entire testimony often refers to a star ("like a star but..."). What surprises the witness results from the size and greater light (or "very slightly greater") and especially the color change. Indeed, that evening Jupiter is well in the SE "above the CHU building" (as indicated for the PAN). Jupiter is very bright (Magnitude = -2.45, only Venus would be brighter in the sky) and at low elevation (between 10° and 20°), which allows for color variation possibilities due to greater atmospheric diffusion and turbulence at low elevation. Many GEIPAN testimonies result from this misidentification, see the GEIPAN website. The haze (seen by the witness) or the clouds present that evening caused the disappearance of the PAN. Note that the GEIPAN request for testimony made to the two other people accompanying the witness did not succeed, which is often the case when the feeling of strangeness is not shared. Consequently, the case is classified as A as the observation of the planet Jupiter.
