On July 28, 2016, between 1:10 a.m. and 1:14 a.m., a witness opens their window and sees for a few seconds several bright points forming a sort of "V" that move rapidly. They think of birds lit from below, then of fighter jets, but notice no noise. The white-yellow points vanish into the night. Only one testimony will be collected. The observation probably corresponds to a flight of Thai lanterns: - glows "like stars," except that one can perceive a size that changes (decreasing here, probably because the lanterns are moving away). - a formation flight (the lanterns move in the same wind current). - a pitching up and final fading: the extinguishing of the lanterns is often simultaneous and can cause a change in trajectory. - the wind measured in Lyon that night (on Infoclimat) is from the west. The movement of the UAP in the sky indicates a displacement toward the east (therefore consistent with the measured wind) and also toward the north because the UAPs move away from the witness looking north (decrease in angular size and drop in elevation or height in the sky). It is noted that the observation takes place in the city and very close to a large river, elements favorable to local wind variations compared to that measured at the weather station even if only a few kilometers away. - the observation takes place on a summer night, favorable for festive lantern release events. Consequently, GEIPAN classifies the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
