An account in Puy-de-Dme, France

On March 5, 2016, around 11 p.m., a witness is intrigued by a bright point that seems stationary in the sky. He observes the phenomenon through a spotting scope and distinguishes blue, purple, and white beams. His wife, also present, thinks it is a star or a twinkling planet. The witness reports the point at an azimuth of 236° (but measured indirectly on Geoportail) and an elevation below 15°. Finally, the witness's wife considers that she saw something like a star, but with a purple color. Now between 11 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., Sirius moves between azimuth 215° (SSW) at an elevation of 15° and azimuth 225° (SW) at an elevation of 13° (see attached sky chart with Stellarium). The UAP can therefore only be Sirius, otherwise the witness would also have reported Sirius (or a very visible star in a clear sky, especially when looking through a spotting scope!) in the immediate vicinity of the UAP. The main witness saw Sirius and was fooled, which is classic, by the glows and changing colors of Sirius at low elevation, and this can be even more so due to observation through a window. Consequently, GEIPAN classifies the case as A: observation of Sirius.
