An account in Marne, France

On December 25, 2014, around 1 a.m., a witness observed two orange lights moving across the sky. The lights followed the same trajectory, a few seconds apart. Only one testimony was collected. The observation of orange balls crossing the sky in a few minutes, on a holiday night, strongly suggests Thai lanterns, probably released nearby for Christmas. The movement was observed from the southwest to the east, which is consistent with the westerly wind of 11 to 20 km/h recorded on Météociel at Reims-Prunay (40 km to the east). The object probably flies lower than the witness estimates, around 50 meters in altitude, since he already notices quite a few details. The relative blur observed is mainly due to the flickering flame, and the vapor or smoke coming off it. GEIPAN classifies this case as "B": probable observation of Thai lanterns.
