An account in Haute-Garonne, France

Recent testimony (11/10/2012) of an old observation. A witness observes with binoculars on October 9, 2010 at 1:20 a.m. a luminous object in the sky. The witness is astonished by the light intensity and the observation of colored luminous points. The astronomical chart, oriented according to the witness's direction of observation (S-SW), shows the presence of the planet Jupiter, of magnitude -2.9, that is, brighter than all the stars in the sky. From 1:20 a.m. to 2:20 a.m., it moves toward the West from azimuth 193° to 220°, and lowers from 40° to 36° of elevation. The witness indicates the object in the SW (South + 45° West: 225°), very bright, especially compared to the stars, which were barely bright. A southeast wind is noted, fairly humid, which brightens the background of the sky, masks the least bright stars, and causes strong scintillation: this probably explains the green/white/red color changes observed by the witness. GEIPAN classifies this case "B" probable observation of Jupiter. The differences of around 20° between the observer's indications and the astronomical position leave an uncertainty that does not allow classifying this case as A.
