An account in Vende, France

On May 1, 2008, between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., a fisherman on a beach observes the slow movement of a white luminous point in the sky that seems to come from the Island of Yeu and moves eastward. The witness will lose sight of the luminous point in the clouds. This observation case has the characteristics of a Thai lantern: movement according to the wind (from the east) of a luminous ball. The date and time are consistent with this hypothesis: one can think of a release from a boat at sea. The observed deviation toward the north is probably an effect of the coast, which modifies the wind flow at low altitude. GEIPAN classifies this case "B": probable observation of a Thai lantern.
