An open record of things people cannot explain

An account in Gironde, France

Recent testimony (2013) of an old observation (2007). On August 15, 2007 at 11:45 PM, a witness observes, while driving his vehicle, a large luminous disk that he first takes for the moon. The view of the phenomenon is masked by the landscape for a few minutes, after which the UAP is no longer visible. An astronomical check shows that the Moon is indeed not visible at that time (waning crescent, set for more than an hour). On the other hand, it is noted that the planet Jupiter is very close to the direction of observation indicated by the witness, and that it is particularly bright (magnitude -2). It is nonetheless surprising that it was perceived as large as the Moon. The Meteociel weather indicates an overcast sky, with intermittent rain. One might think of a scattering effect of low clouds that would create a halo around Jupiter. (cf. a halo in winter). In a completely different vein, one might also think of the headlight of an agricultural vehicle on a ridge, seen through the mist after the rain. It is very difficult in hindsight to validate or not either of these hypotheses. The GEIPAN classifies this case "C" due to lack of information and cross-checks.
